Gemayel meets Berri, lauds his 'moderation' despite 'huge disagreements'

Kataeb leader Sami Gemayel met Thursday with Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, as Lebanon plans to disarm Hezbollah under U.S. pressure.
A harsh critic of Hezbollah, Gemayel said he rejects the marginalization of the Shiite community. "We want the Shia community to be a partner in building the new Lebanon, and this is a red line for us."
Gemayel also lauded Berri's moderation, despite what he called "huge disagreements" on many issues.
"Berri is trying to find common ground and to ease tensions in the country," Gemayel said after the meeting.
"This is something the country needs, and it's a form of moderation within the Shia community. We meet him halfway, despite many disagreements with (his party) Amal."
