Israeli strike on army checkpoint in south kills soldier, injures others
The Israeli army targeted overnight into Monday several towns and villages in south Lebanon as Hezbollah claimed attacks against soldiers in the south and targets in north Israel.
A strike on a Lebanese army checkpoint in al-Amirieh between Tyre and Naqoura, killed a soldier and wounded at least four others. Strikes also targeted Shaqra, Dweir, Zrarieh, Bazourieh, Qaaqaiyet al-Jesser, Yater, Qalaway, Hanaway, Baraashit, and a public school in Samaiyeh, while artillery shelled al-Mansouri, Maroun al-Ras, Yaroun and Bint Jbeil.
At least 11 Lebanese army soldiers have been killed in Israeli strikes since the latest war erupted earlier this month.
Prior to the war, the Lebanese military was gradually deploying in the south in a bid to assert full control. They have not clashed with Israeli ground forces that have invaded Lebanon.
In Hanaway, ambulances were targeted after Israel claimed that Hezbollah is using them. No casualties were reported. In al-Mansouri, a strike targeted a center belonging to the Hezbollah-affiliated Islamic Health Committee.
An Israeli strike on an ambulance belonging to the Islamic Health Committee killed one paramedic and his patient Sunday, a day after at least nine first aid workers were killed by Israeli strikes on the south. According to the health ministry, 47 paramedics have been killed since the war began.
Israeli troops also burned houses in the southern border village of Naqoura, as they advanced in south Lebanon amid clashes with Hezbollah.
Hezbollah said it targeted soldiers and Merkava tanks in Ainata, Maroun al-Ras, al-Qantara, al-Qawzah, Aitaroun, Odaisseh, Deir Seryan, Khiam and Houla in south Lebanon and military targets in north Israel including the Ain Zeitim base north of Safad, a maritime base in Haifa, Malikiya, the Geva base east of Safad, Avivim, Kiryat Shmona, the Mishmar HaCarmel missile defense site south of Haifa, Metula, Dovev, Shomera, Yir'on, and a base in Tel Aviv's suburbs. The group also targeted military infrastructure in Katzrin in the occupied Golan Heights.
The attacks were carried out with rocket salvos, advanced missiles and attack drones, Hezbollah said.
The Israeli military said on Monday that a soldier was killed a day earlier in combat in southern Lebanon, bringing to six the number of troops killed since fighting with Hezbollah started earlier in March. An officer was also seriously wounded.
