An army officer was killed and three soldiers were wounded Sunday in Libya's lawless eastern city of Benghazi, security and medical sources said.
"Unknown gunmen opened fire at Colonel Saad al-Jamli as he dropped off his son at a school in central Benghazi," a security official told Agence France Presse.
Fadia al-Barghathi, spokeswoman for the Mediterranean city's al-Jala hospital, said 51-year-old Jamli's body was brought in with five bullet wounds in the head.
Separately, three special forces members were wounded in a blast as they took part in a clean-up operation after a strike by garbage collectors.
"An individual in a car threw a booby-trapped device into the garbage dump near the soldiers," another security source said, citing witnesses.
Militants in Benghazi, cradle of the 2011 revolt that toppled longtime strongman Moammar Gadhafi, have targeted security forces and foreigners, as well as judges, political activists and the media.
