25 People, 11 Army Defectors Killed in Syria

Syrian troops killed 25 people, 21 of which were shot dead during search operations in the flashpoint central city of Homs on Monday, a human rights watchdog said.

"Twenty-one people, some civilians and others police officers, were killed in Homs during operations by the army and the security services in several neighborhoods of the city," the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

Ban Urges Assad to Stop Killing Civilians

U.N. chief Ban Ki-moon on Monday urged Syrian President Bashar Assad to immediately stop the killings of civilians and to accept an international probe on human rights violations.

"There are continuous killings of civilian people. These killings must stop immediately," said the U.N. chief in Bern.

Kurd Activist Accuses Syrian Embassy Guards of Assaulting him

A Syrian Kurd opposition member was injured in a clash between protestors and the Syrian embassy’s security guards in the Beirut district of Hamra on Sunday, An Nahar daily reported.

Kurd activist Kadar Saleh Beeri told the newspaper that he was beaten by members of the embassy guards after he was returning from a demonstration held by around 50 Kurds outside the premises of the mission.

Nine Killed in Syria Crackdown: Activists

Nine people were killed on Sunday as Syrian security forces pressed a crackdown on political dissent in three separate hubs of protest against President Bashar al-Assad's regime, activists said.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said in emailed statements received by Agence France Presse in Nicosia that four civilians died in the central city of Homs when security forces opened fire on a protest outside the home of a detained activist, Mansur al-Arassi.

Arab League Urges Syrian 'National Dialogue' within 15 Days‎

The Arab Foreign ministers on Sunday called on the Syrian regime and the opposition to hold a national dialogue at the Arab League's Headquarters in fifteen days.

At the end of the emergency meeting in Cairo on the crisis in Syria the Arab league urged the "immediate cease of violence and the removal of security troops from the streets in order to maintain peace."

Syria Forces Shoot on Activist Funeral: Rights Group

Syrian security forces opened fire on a funeral procession for an activist in the oil-rich east on Sunday as they pressed a crackdown on dissent, a human rights group said.

"Syrian security forces in Deir Ezzor fired live bullets at a funeral procession for Ziad al-Obeidi," the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said in reference to one of its associates on the ground.

As the revolt in Syria drags on, experts say weapons smuggling into the country has flourished, especially from Lebanon, with automatic weapons, grenades and hunting rifles in high demand.

They say that those behind the trafficking are smugglers in search of quick profits rather than political parties backing protesters against the Alawite-dominated regime in Syria.
