The European Commission said Sunday it has not been told of any specific threat against it, after reports suggested its Brussels headquarters was a possible target for jihadist fighters returning from Syria.

Belgian authorities confirmed Saturday they had made several arrests as they sought to prevent jihadist fighters or sympathizers with the Islamic State extremist group from carrying out attacks.

Progressive Socialist Party chief MP Walid Jumblat called on Sunday for the protection of Syrian refugees against violence sparked by the killing of Lebanese soldiers kidnapped by jihadists.

Four foreign men detained in Indonesia for allegedly planning to take part in militant training were officially named suspects for breaking counter-terrorism and immigration laws, police said Saturday.

Some 45,000 Syrian Kurds fleeing advancing Islamic State jihadists have poured across the border into Turkey since Ankara opened up its southern frontier on Friday, the country's deputy prime minister said.

"As of now, 45,000 Syrian Kurds have have crossed the border and entered the Turkish soil from eight entrance points," Numan Kurtulmus told reporters on Saturday.
