U.S. Charges Six over Iraq-Syria 'Terrorist' Links

The U.S. Department of Justice said Friday six people had been charged over an alleged attempt to send money and military supplies to militant groups in Iraq and Syria, including to IS jihadists.

According to the indictment, which was made public on Friday, five of the defendants are in the United States and have been arrested, while a sixth is overseas. They are charged with conspiracy to provide support to terrorist organizations.

More Than 30 IS Jihadists Killed in Coalition Raids on Syria

More than 30 jihadists in the Islamic State group were killed Friday in air strikes on Syria by warplanes of the U.S.-led coalition, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

"At least 30 jihadists, and certainly more, were killed in coalition raids on Friday against positions and depots sheltering military vehicles and tanks, east and west of the city of Raqa," the self-proclaimed IS capital, the Britain-based monitor said.

IS Killing of Jordan Pilot Puts Pressure on Rescue Ops

The horrifying images of a Jordanian pilot burned alive by the Islamic State group this week has put added pressure on the US to ensure rapid rescue operations for its partners.

U.S. officials confirmed last month that the United Arab Emirates -- nicknamed "Little Sparta" for its initial eagerness to enter the fray against Islamic State -- had pulled out of the U.S.-led air campaign over concerns about rescue operations.

Syria Kurds Seize Dozens of Villages from IS

Syrian Kurdish fighters have seized dozens of villages from Islamic State group jihadists around the town of Kobane on the Turkish border, expanding their control in the area, a monitor said Friday.

The Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG) had captured 101 villages around Kobane since seizing it from IS on January 26 after four months of fighting, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

British Jihadist who Faked Death Jailed for 12 Years

A British jihadist believed to have faked his own death while fighting in Syria in order to return home undetected was jailed for 12 years by a London court on Friday.

Imran Khawaja, 27, an amateur bodybuilder from London who used to work in an immigrant detention center, admitted preparing for acts of terrorism, attending a training camp and possessing firearms.

IS Cleric Removed for Objecting to Pilot Burning

A Saudi cleric with the Islamic State jihadist group has been removed from his post after objecting to the burning alive of a captured Jordanian pilot, a monitor said Friday.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the cleric, known by the nom-de-guerre Abu Musab al-Jazrawi, raised objections during a Thursday meeting to the way pilot Maaz al-Kassasbeh was killed.

EU Pledges 1 bn Euros for Syria, Iraq Fight against IS

The European Union has pledged one billion euros in funding for the crises in Syria and Iraq and the fight against the Islamic State militant group, the bloc's foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini said Friday.

"This package will strengthen our actions to help restore peace and security in a region that is so close to us and that has been devastated by terrorism and violence for too long," Mogherini said.

Lebanese Authorities Thwart Terrorist Plot to Create 'Security Belt'

The authorities have foiled a plot by militants from Syria to create a passage to West Bekaa, the South and the North to establish their planned emirate on Lebanese territories, As Safir daily reported Friday.

The newspaper said that the authorities have intercepted conversations and seized documents from extremist groups that revealed a plot to open the passage to the West Bekaa area through the Majdal Anjar Valley and to the South so that they could reach areas where Palestinian camps are located.
