The United Nations said Thursday there is an acute shortage of money to provide aid to refugees from Syria and their hosts in neighboring countries, appealing for funding to be speeded up.
Some 3.9 million people have fled the civil war in Syria, and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees said the shortage is hampering assistance to them and to more than 20 million people in the countries hosting them.

Iran held a joint funeral on Thursday for three nationals killed fighting the Islamic State group alongside forces of its close ally Syria, state media reported.
The memorial service for the three Iranians, all from Tehran, was attended by around 2,000 people, the official IRNA news agency reported.

Israeli police said Thursday they arrested three more suspects in attacks by members of the Druze minority on military ambulances transporting wounded Syrians to hospital.

A rebel alliance, including al-Qaida's Syria affiliate Al-Nusra Front, attacked government-held parts of the southern city of Daraa on Thursday, a monitoring group said.

Australia's domestic spy agency Thursday played down concerns that maps shown in a media briefing revealing the source of homegrown fighters travelling to the Middle East were classified, after fears their publication was a security breach.
The maps, which revealed the Sydney and Melbourne suburbs where fighters heading to join jihadists came from, were photographed and filmed by journalists during a meeting Wednesday between Prime Minister Tony Abbott and spy chief Duncan Lewis.

At least 19 Islamic State group fighters were killed on Wednesday in a failed attack on an Alawite village in the central Syrian province of Homs, a monitor said.

Israeli police said Wednesday they had carried out a "wave of arrests" of suspects involved in two attacks by Druze on military vehicles transporting wounded Syrians to hospital.
Israeli media said nine Druze were arrested over the attacks on Monday, when a mob killed a Syrian and wounded another in the Golan Heights and an ambulance was stoned in the Galilee town of Hurfesh.
