Libya's Prime Minister Abdullah al-Thani on Monday won the blessing of parliament for his proposed cabinet of 13 ministers, after a previous line-up was rejected.

Thani and the internationally recognized parliament, elected in June, are in virtual domestic exile in the far eastern city of Tobruk because of widespread insecurity, including in the capital, where a rival administration has been set up.

At least 10 migrants have died in a shipwreck off Libya and up to 35 more are missing, presumed drowned, Italian media reported on Sunday.

In the latest tragedy to hit the Mediterranean sea, an overcrowded boat which was attempting the crossing from North Africa to Italy sank around 30 miles (50 kilometers) from the Libyan coast, the reports said.

Libya's parliament rejected Prime Minister Abdullah al-Thani's proposed 18-member cabinet Thursday, calling for a slimline "crisis" team of not more than 10 ministers, a deputy said.

A former Libyan air force chief was shot dead overnight in the country's violence-ridden second city of Benghazi, medical and army sources said on Thursday.

"Unidentified gunmen killed former air force chief of staff general Ahmed Habib al-Mesmari in the Al-Hadaek district" in the city center, a senior air base officer in Benghazi told AFP, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Libya's internationally recognized premier presented Wednesday a new cabinet to parliament in the eastern city of Tobruk, in opposition to a Tripoli government, as the strife-torn country's political divisions deepened.

The administration of Abdullah al-Thani and parliament, elected in June, both moved to Tobruk in August for security reasons when Islamist-backed militias captured most of the capital Tripoli and second city Benghazi.

Islamist fighters launched another offensive Wednesday on the airport in Libya's Benghazi, the final redoubt in the eastern city of an ex-general who has been waging war on them, an AFP correspondent said.

The fighters of the Shura Revolutionary Council, which includes the Islamist Ansar al-Sharia group, have been trying since early September to capture the facility, which houses both civilian and military airfields.

A warplane carried out an air raid Monday on a military base in western Libya held by anti-government militias, in an attack claimed by renegade former general Khalifa Haftar.

State news agency LANA said 15 people were lightly wounded as the raid hit a munitions depot in the town of Gharyan, 120 kilometers (75 miles) southwest of the capital.

Dozens of African migrants were missing and feared dead after their boat sank off the coast of Libya, a Libyan navy spokesman told Agence France Presse on Monday.

The new parliament in Libya, where rival administrations are vying for power, announced Sunday the dismissal of central bank governor Seddik al-Kabir following allegations of financial irregularities.

"The governor was summoned to appear before parliament after allegations of financial irregularities. Mr Kabir did not appear so MPs voted to have him dismissed," Fradj Abu Hashem, spokesman for Libya's internationally recognized parliament, told Agence France Presse

A young girl was one of at least two migrants who drowned and six more were rescued when their boat sank on Friday in the Mediterranean Sea, Greek port police said.
