For nearly two years, beekeeper Salim Sharaf has been unable to reach about 150 of his 200 beehives near the southern Lebanese border village of Mari.

The hives remain in an area where Israeli troops are present, leaving Sharaf uncertain whether the colonies survived, were destroyed during the fighting or dispersed after being left unattended.

In the predominantly Christian towns of Marjayoun and nearby Qlayaa in southern Lebanon, daily life continues in the shadow of a war that devastated many surrounding Shiite villages during months of fighting between Israel and Hezbollah.

While the two towns largely escaped the widespread destruction seen elsewhere along the border, residents remain surrounded by villages still bearing the scars of airstrikes, shelling and ground combat. Home to about 2,000 to 2,500 residents each, Marjayoun and Qlayaa have become pockets of relative stability in a region grappling with conflict.

They were among a trickle of residents who returned to the city to check on their homes after the announcement of a deal between the U.S. and Iran to end their war. Iranian officials have said the deal will also mandate an end to the Israel-Hezbollah war in Lebanon.

Trump told reporters on Tuesday that he did not think an attack on Hezbollah by Israel would necessarily sink the agreement, though he said he was "not happy with the way Israel has handled themselves with Lebanon and with Hezbollah."

Israeli strikes in Lebanon have killed nearly 4,000 people, including hundreds of civilians, and displaced more than 1 million since fighting there began on March 2. "Israel’s fighting Hezbollah too long, and too many people are being killed," Trump said.

U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called on Hezbollah to allow Lebanon’s government “to have the primacy of arms and authority throughout its territory,” U.N. spokesman Stephane Dujarric said.

Guterres also called on Israel to respect Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and withdraw its troops.
