Aoun meets Arab League chief, says Lebanon committed to 'diplomatic solution'

President Joseph Aoun on Monday emphasized that "Lebanon adheres to the diplomatic solution despite its difficulty,” because it is “far less costly than a devastating war for which the Lebanese -- and especially the people of the South -- are paying the price.”

“It is time for Lebanon to find peace," Aoun added, in a meeting with visiting Arab League chief Nabil Fahmy.

The president welcomed any effort and endeavor by the Arab League "to help Lebanon overcome this difficult phase it is going through."

He pointed out that Israel has not committed to the framework agreement, and that the South remains subject to daily violations. He noted that “while this will lead nowhere -- and will only increase the Lebanese people's attachment to their land and rights -- it does not help the Lebanese state achieve its designated goals.”

In turn, Arab League chief Fahmy affirmed his complete support and commitment, as well as that of the Arab League, "to the Lebanese state and its institutions, and to not compromising the sovereignty of this country."

He also revealed that he will visit the war-hit South on Tuesday.

"I am ready to make all necessary contacts, from my position as Secretary-General of the League, with Arab and Western countries to support Lebanon and the Lebanese," Fahmy added.

"My presence here is a positive message toward Lebanon. When I leave Lebanon after completing the visit tomorrow, I will be carrying additional responsibilities in light of what I heard from the president, what I will hear from other officials, and my meetings with several Lebanese politicians."
