Residents return to Zawtar al-Gharbiyeh as Israeli forces destroy nearby villages

Israeli forces detonated overnight into Friday houses and culverts in al-Khiam, Majdalzoun, Serbine, Kfartebnit, Haddatha, Tiri and Kounine, while strikes targeted the outskirts of al-Mansouri and Deir Seryan.

The Israeli army also conducted mock raids over several areas in south Lebanon.

Displaced residents were meanwhile returning Friday to check on their homes in Zawtar al-Gharbiyeh, one of several "pilot zones" where the Lebanese army deployed as part of a Washington-sponsored deal with Israel.

In nearby Zawtar al-Sharqiyeh, Israeli troops remain.

Lebanon and Israel started in April rare direct talks championed by Washington.

They reached an agreement by late June, setting a plan for the deployment of Lebanese military forces in areas in southern Lebanon, where Hezbollah had a military presence and influence, and the withdrawal of Israeli forces, while disarming the militant group.

The first pilot zone includes three southern villages, Froun, Srifa, and Zawtar al-Gharbiyeh -- all outside the primary Israeli-occupied buffer zone.
