Two killed as Israeli forces open fire on civilians in Nabatieh al-Fawqa

Israeli machinegun fire killed two people and wounded a third on Tuesday in southern Lebanon, state media reported, despite a reduction in hostilities there following the declaration of a new ceasefire.

Two young men were killed and a third was injured when Israeli forces opened machine-gun fire toward them in Nabatieh al-Fawqa, the National News Agency reported. The victims were standing near an excavator and an Islamic Health Commity team that was working to clear roads and retrieve bodies in the Deir neighborhood.

Hezbollah decried in a stament what it called a "blatant violation" of the ceasefire.

In Hadatha, Israeli forces fired on residents accompanied by the Lebanese Army during a burial procession on the outskirts of the town.

A strike targeted the southern town on Kfartebnit, near the Israeli-declared yellow line, the first since the latest ceasefire went into effect on Saturday.

Israeli soldiers also fired stun grenades in Kfartebnit, Aita al-Jabal and Barasheet, while drones overflew Beirut’s southern suburbs, Tyre, and multiple areas across southern Lebanon.

The Israeli army said its forces attacked armed men near a "security zone" where Israeli troops are deployed in Ali Taher. "A short while ago, the IDF identified a cell of armed terrorists operating in close proximity to IDF soldiers in the security zone in the Ali al-Taher Ridge area," the army statement said.

These developments come ahead of a fifth round of Lebanese-Israeli negotiations scheduled to begin today in Washington, and despite a truce that has been in effect since Saturday, after several previous ceasefires failed to halt the fighting in Lebanon.
