Ex-Cop Named Ukraine's New Defense Minister
A former policeman who headed the state's VIP bodyguard service in Ukraine was Thursday named the country's new defense minister, making him the pointman in the battle against pro-Kremlin rebels in the east.
Valeriy Geletey was nominated to the post by President Petro Poroshenko and confirmed by parliament.
Lawmakers also approved General Viktor Mujenko, a career soldier trained in the Soviet Union, as the head of the joint chiefs of staff, putting him in command of the military hierarchy.
The two men will be tasked with pursuing a military campaign launched in April to oust pro-Moscow insurgents who control several eastern cities and towns.
