U.S. Backs Ukraine Ceasefire Plan
Washington on Wednesday welcomed Ukrainian proposals for a unilateral ceasefire in the troubled east, but stressed Kiev needed "a partner" to help end the fighting by the pro-Russia separatist insurgency.
Ukraine's new Western-backed President Petro Poroshenko said he would order the ceasefire in the coming days, offering an amnesty for those who laid down their arms unilaterally, as well as safe corridors for Russian fighters to return home.
"This was a unilateral step, so these steps were taken by the Ukrainian government (and) we certainly commend them for these good-faith efforts," State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki told reporters.
"But naturally, they need a partner in this effort," she stressed.
Poroshenko unveiled his peace initiative after late-night talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Psaki said the U.S. had not seen any indications that of any reciprocal good-faith efforts by Moscow.
"That's one of the reasons why a partner is needed, and Russia of course must support the peace plan... instead of continuing to support the separatists on the ground," Psaki said.
